This city is endowed with enormous beauty, surrounded in the south by the eastern Himalayas along with the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys. Guwahati has a vivid culture and a distinct cuisine to explore. It is a trade centre for the commercial production of tea and is home to various temples.

1. The Kamakhya Temple

Located atop the Nilachal hill its an important site for tantric Hinduism. It is dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya who is known as the Bleeding Goddess. It comes under 51 Shakti Pithas and it is the most sacred of all. It is the most popular temple in Guwahati and is considered very spiritual. Every year a lot of people visit Guwahati to perform a pilgrimage to this place.

2. Umananda Temple

This temple has a historic presence as it was built in 1694 by the Ahom Dynasty. This temple is revered by thousands of followers and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in the middle of the Brahmaputra River on Peacock Island, this temple can be easily reached by the followers through ferries and boats. During Mahashivratri, the temple is decorated beautifully and the celebrations are at their peak. 

3. Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre

This is a museum dedicated to the spirit and legacy of the majestic river, the Brahmaputra. It is built under the support of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority and is located on a hillock, with the first Deputy Commissioner Captain James Matthie’s bungalow perched on top. This is a must-visit place as it was once a site for a famous battle between the Ahom and Mughal forces and tells the legacy of the city. It has various antique artifacts that are preserved for the people to see and understand the glory of that time.

4. Guwahati Ropeway

Guwahati has a strategic location; the river Brahmaputra flows across the city. Guwahati ropeway is built to connect the southern and northern banks of the river. It has been opened to people and has become a popular tourist attraction. The ropeway gives a panoramic view of the city. It stretches for 1.8 km giving an enthralling ride of 10 minutes to the people.

5. Fancy Bazar

When visiting a new city, one always thinks of taking back something in the form of a souvenir. While being in Guwahati, Fancy Bazar is the perfect place to shop for a Moga silk saree, the very famous Mekhla Chadar, and to taste the best street food. Guwahati is famous for its tea plantations, so here you can find premium, fine quality tea leaves to take back home, along with some cherished memories.
