On 7 April 2026, the High Commission of Rwanda in India, along with the United Nations in India, organized the Kwibuka32 event at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, to mark 32 years of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event was held in two parts — morning and evening. The morning session had an exhibition with around 450 students and educators. Students displayed artworks showing the impact of the genocide while also spreading messages of peace and unity.
H.E. Ms Jacqueline Mukangira , High Commissioner of Rwanda thanked the Government of India for its support and highlighted the strong ties between the two countries. She said the commemoration is a time to remember the victims, support survivors, and acknowledge those who helped end the violence. She also spoke about how the genocide was planned and the brutality faced by victims, stressing that “Never Again” must be taken seriously, while noting Rwanda’s progress towards unity, reconciliation, and development.
H.E. Mr. Kevin Kelly, Ambassador of Ireland to India, reflected on his experience working in Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide. He expressed admiration for Rwanda’s resilience, visionary leadership, and remarkable progress. He noted that the country’s rise from the ashes stands as an example of how a nation can move forward without being defined by its past.
The evening session brought together over 650 attendees, including officials, diplomats, and members of the Rwandan community in India. The event focused on remembering the victims and spreading awareness about the genocide. It also reflected on Rwanda’s journey towards unity, recovery, and development over the years.
