India-Fiji Bilateral Relations

H.E. Mr. Jagnnath Sami High Commissioner of Fiji to India

India and Fiji share a very special and enduring bond, going back almost a century and a half. There has been a strong growth in the high-level engagements, development projects and people-centric activities.

India and Fiji have been strengthening their engagements with each other, and it has been India’s endeavour to strengthen its engagement with the Pacific region, bilaterally with the countries of the region and under the action-oriented Forum for India and the Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC). FIPIC is a multilateral platform established by India to enhance cooperation with the Pacific Island countries and the 1st FIPIC was inaugurated by Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji in Fiji in 2014. The initiative was announced by PM Modi as part of India’s “Act East” policy to strengthen engagement with the Pacific Island countries.

Despite the physical distance. both countries have a close bond, and Fiji remains India’s very special partner in Indo-Pacific. In times of need, India has always been among the first countries to respond to Fiji’s needs, and this has been demonstrated during the time of COVID-19, providing vaccines to Fiji in 2021 under the Vaccine Maitri initiative as well providing Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief Support during times of natural disasters.

In the last 18 months alone, 15 Ministerial level visits have taken place on both the sides. The historic meeting of both the Prime Ministers in May 2023, during the FIPIC-III Summit has given new energy and direction to the bilateral ties.

This year, the visit by the Her Excellency, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, marked a new chapter as it further boosted the strong momentum that has been generated by the increasing level of high-level contacts between our two nations during the past several years, and which was also marked by 75 years of India’s diplomatic presence in Fiji.

Cooperation between the two countries continues to grow from strength to strength.
