Bilateral Trading

Interview – ‘H.E. Mr. Reuben Gauci’ High Commissioner of Malta to India

Bilateral trade between Malta and India

Malta Ambassador

H.E. Mr.Reuben Gauci
High Commissioner of Malta to India

Malta highly understands that the growth of the past two decades has led India to make a remarkable progress in reducing extreme poverty, with India having reached the prestigious fourth position in the global economic rankings. Malta
commends India’s aspiration to achieve high income status by 2047, which will need to be realized through a climate-
resilient growth process that delivers broad-based gains to the bottom half of the population. We of course understand that
both our countries are very different in geographical size and population size. The difference is in fact enormous, as India has the largest population in the world, whilst Malta hosts one of the smallest populations on the planet. Nevertheless, last year,
in 2024, Malta imported goods worth almost €300 million from India, while Malta’s exports to India have also increased
thanks to the importation of Maltese products such as Cisk Beer, Vicheez snacks ( known as Twistees in Malta ) and Go & Fun
Energy Drinks, which have put our trade bilateral relations on the right path to reducing the trade deficit which Malta has,
with India at the moment.

It is here my pleasure to announce that we have more Maltese products which will be entering the vast Indian market
shortly. Here I also have to mention Malta’s main imports from India which include pharmaceutical products (71%), organic
chemicals (12%), and electrical machinery (2%). Most of this is thanks to India’s investments in Malta which harbours 112
Indian owned companies within its economic activity. To conclude, Malta strongly believes in the need for an India – EU Free
Trade Agreement and is looking forward to the signature of this Agreement between both parties, hopefully in the near
future. As a proud member of the European Union, Malta believes that such a Free Trade Agreement with India could
provide great benefits for bilateral trade between Malta and India along with the possibility of witnessing a larger amount of
Indian Investment in Malta and hopefully, also promote Maltese Investment in India.
