Sun Siyam World Opens Maldives’ First Resort Plastic Upcycling Center

Siyam World Maldives inaugurated the country’s first large-scale Plastic Upcycling Center in collaboration with CLEAN Maldives, setting new standards for sustainability in hospitality. The facility transforms discarded plastics—such as oil containers, drums, and shampoo bottles—into functional products, including sunbeds, planters, and outdoor seating.

60% of their products go to the resort, while 40% are managed by CLEAN Maldives and given in large part to public parks and beaches in the surrounding areas. The resort’s operations have benefited from the shared value approach, which is also accessible to the nearby region of Kudafari Island, which encircles the resort.

The center, launched under the World Bank-funded PLEASE Project, was inaugurated by Mr. Abdulla Thamheed, Vice President of Sun Siyam Resorts, and Ms. Hafsath Aleem, Founder of CLEAN Maldives, with support from UNOPS, SACEP, local councils, and resort staff.

The initiative has generated jobs, supported SDGs 9, 12, and 17, and provided guided tours for guests and local schools to showcase successful collaborations and innovations.
