A Walk of Pride!
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, 8th March 2022 Indiatourism Delhi, Ministry of Tourism hosted a walk to the National War Memorial. It stands tall in the premises of the iconic India Gate with a history to commemorate the Battle Casualty (Fatal) of India during World War I as well as Third Anglo-Afghan War and the post-Independence Era Battles.
This place tells the history of the fearless Indians who have laid down their lives to save the pride of the country. There are 83,000 Indians who fought with all their strength to subdue the enemies, India Gate bears 13,516 names of the casualties inscribed all over the monument. The National War Memorial complex is built in a symmetrical layout with simplistic architecture and design which exemplifies the sacrifices made by a soldier on duty making him immortal and eternal. Apart from the main memorial, there is a park that is dedicated to those soldiers who have received the ‘Param Vir Chakra,’ the nation’s highest gallantry award.
The memorial is beautifully constructed in lit concentric circles with varied ‘Chakras’ that signify visual hierarchy by focusing on points of interest and accentuating different areas using suitable lighting fixtures. The Rakshak Chakra reflects solidity and duality. Lights highlight ‘Rakshaks’. Tyag Chakra illuminates the inscribed names of the soldiers to highlight supreme sacrifices. Veerta Chakra emphasizes the celebration of bravery and victory and the Amar Chakra glows to portray the sign of purity around the Obelisk and Eternal Flame.
The visitors can plan a day visit to catch an eye on activities that are curated daily at the premises. These include Retreat Drill just before the sunset, change of guard ceremony and band display before the Retreat Drill every Sunday, and many others.
