The city of joy, Mandu, is situated in the emerald locales of Madhya Pradesh, beckoning Nature lovers and historical afficionados alike. Jahaz Mahal
Literally the ship palace, is flanked on either side by lakes, which gives the impression of a ship floating on the water. One of the admirers of Jahaz Mahal include Emperor Jehangir who visited the palace with his beloved wife, Noor Jahan. This architectural wonder is believed to have had India’s very first terrace pool!
Jal Mahal
Forming a part of the royal palace, “the water palace” boasts of a perfect amalgamation of Roman, Mughal and Afghan art. The beautiful architecture can be best enjoyed during the monsoon, when the lakes are filled with water and nature looks pristine.
Baaz Mahal
Visible from Rani Roopmati’s Mahal, Baaz Bahadur Mahal is a fascinating blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. The mahal stands witness to the enchanting tale of Baaz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati.
Rani Roopmati Mahal
Giving a panoramic view of the lush green forest of Nimar Valley, is the Rani Roopmati Mahal. A witness to the tragic love story of Baaz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati, the palace was perched in such a manner that the queen could see Baaz Bahadur’s palace and the mighty Narmada. A walk around Mandu takes you back in time, with beauty surrounding you, in the most remote of places.
Jami Masjid
Modelled on the lines of the Mosque of Damascus, Jami Masjid overlooks the village of Mandu. An interesting feature about various domes of the mosque, is the amplified sound and echo absorbing devices, to enable even a feeble voice be heard from miles away.
Hoshang Shah Tomb
Considered to be India’s first marble tomb and having inspired Shah Jahan to build Taj Mahal, is the Hoshang Shah’s tomb. An excellent example of Afghani architecture, this mausoleum was made of marble and has intricate colourful designs which enthused Shah Jahan to make one for his beloved.
Hindola Mahal
Literally meaning “swinging palace”, it is considered to be a meeting hall with majestic slopping walls, giving an impression the monument of the swinging.
