Prime Minister Modi’s Historic Visit to Croatia Marks a New Era in Bilateral Relations

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a historic visit to Croatia, the first such visit by an Indian head of government. He was greeted by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković at Zagreb Airport. The visit was intended to enhance bilateral relations in the field of trade, culture, education, and strategic cooperation.

On the visit, various agreements were signed in fields including agriculture, science and technology, higher education, and culture. The leaders also talked about intensifying cooperation in ICT, pharmaceuticals, and maritime shipping. Croatia highlighted its status as a Mediterranean portal to Central Europe and offered support for India’s quest to conclude a free trade agreement with the European Union.

Two-way trade between the two countries stood at $242 million in 2024, while in early 2025 it improved by 10%. Indian tourists are also increasing in number to visit Croatia.

As a goodwill gesture, PM Plenković presented Modi a replica of first printed Sanskrit grammar (1790) by Croatian missionary Filip Vezdin and a book entitled Croatia & India, Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business.

Leaders talked about international problems, such as hostilities in Ukraine and the Middle East, and reiterated their resolve to fight terrorism. Croatia, which holds the Three Seas Initiative presidency, views India as an important economic ally. Modi also visited Zagreb’s ancient Upper Town and attended a ceremonial dinner with businesspeople and cultural leaders.

The visit represents a new chapter in India–Croatia relations, increasing cooperation and raising the profile of Croatia in India’s European policy.
