Indian Visitor Surge and Digital Innovation Drive Tourism Boom in Japan

Japan received more than 43,000 Indian visitors in May 2025—the highest ever single-month number—indicated its increasing popularity among Indian travellers. This is consistent with India’s summer vacations and Japan’s post-Golden Week slowdown, when the weather is perfect and tourist attractions are less crowded. Between January and May 2025, about 142,400 Indians arrived in Japan, a 39.6% increase compared to the same months of 2024, when 102,100 visited. To increase interest prior to EXPO 2025 Osaka, the Japan National Tourism Organization has introduced a free Digital NFT Art Collection Campaign. Available to all overseas visitors, the campaign combines technology and travel as tourists can collect location-specific NFTs at major sites. The digital tokens release special content and limited-run souvenirs. The more places one visits, the more digital prizes one receives—giving travel in Japan’s experience an added, interactive element. Japan is further consolidating tourism connections with India by embracing innovation and cultural engagement.
