On 27 May 2026, The Embassy of Nepal organized a commemorative event at its premises to mark Everest Day 2026, honouring the historic first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. The event, brought together members of the diplomatic community, mountaineers, adventurers, friends of Nepal, and representatives from Nepali and international organisations.
The programme began with a welcome address by Mr. Taranath Adhikari, Economic Minister at the Embassy, who greeted the gathering and highlighted the significance of Everest Day. He paid tribute to legendary climbers Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary for their groundbreaking achievement on 29 May 1953, describing Mount Everest as a symbol of courage, resilience, determination, and international cooperation.
The event featured celebrated Indian mountaineers Prem Singh, Tusi Anit Sah, and Neeraj Choudhary, who shared inspiring Himalayan experiences before being felicitated by the Embassy. Col. Madan Gurung of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation lauded the initiative, while Acting High Commissioner of New Zealand Matthew Ayres reflected on Sir Edmund Hillary’s legacy. Concluding the programme, Dr. Surendra Thapa emphasized sustainable mountain tourism and respect for Himalayan communities, followed by informal interactions celebrating Everest’s enduring spirit of courage and cooperation.
