Bilateral Trading

H.E. Mr. Francisco Manuel Comprés Hernández, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to India

India–Dominican Republic: Building a Modern Partnership Across the Caribbean

As India expands its engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is emerging as one of its most promising strategic partners. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in May 1999, the bilateral relationship has steadily evolved beyond traditional trade into a broader agenda encompassing investment, technology, logistics and sustainable development. The forthcoming signing of the India–Dominican Republic Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) will establish the first institutional framework dedicated to advancing bilateral trade, industrial cooperation and investment.

Today, with a GDP exceeding USD 120 billion and a GDP per capita of approximately USD 11,000, the Dominican Republic has consolidated its position as one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America and the Caribbean. For Indian businesses seeking to expand into the Americas, the country offers a uniquely competitive platform, combining macroeconomic stability, a business-friendly investment climate, modern logistics infrastructure, competitive free trade zones and preferential access to markets across North and Central America, the Caribbean, Europe and the United Kingdom.

Economic ties between the two countries have gained significant momentum in recent years. Bilateral trade has reached record levels, driven by the Dominican Republic’s exports of gold and other minerals to India, while Indian pharmaceuticals, automobiles, engineering products and manufactured goods continue to expand their presence in the Dominican market. Beyond trade, both countries have considerable potential for cooperation in renewable energy, digital transformation, healthcare, biotechnology, tourism, education and innovation.

Institutional collaboration is also advancing through agreements among government agencies, investment promotion organizations, universities and regulatory bodies, reflecting a shared commitment to facilitating business, promoting technology transfer and encouraging long-term partnerships. In this regard, JETCO represents an important milestone by providing the first permanent institutional mechanism dedicated to promoting trade, investment and industrial cooperation between the two countries.

United by democratic values, openness and a shared commitment to sustainable development, India and the Dominican Republic are well positioned to build a resilient and forward-looking partnership. As global supply chains continue to diversify, this growing relationship can strengthen economic connectivity between India and the Caribbean while creating new opportunities for trade, investment and innovation. The foundations are already in place. The next chapter of this partnership will be defined not by geography, but by shared ambition and sustained collaboration.
